Trust Me: Bearing Fruit in a Year of Drought

“But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”** Jeremiah 17:7-8 (NIV)**

The Lesson Learned

Those who call God their Father are blessed. Their confidence and trust is placed in Him – not in the world, nor in another person or a thing, nor even in themselves, but in Him. We can depend upon Him in all our straits and in all our ecstasies. And those who walk with Him are enabled to flourish as by a tree planted by streams of water even as we walk through extraordinarily difficult and dry seasons. As we fix our eyes on Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of our faith, we can prosper through His power in our difficulties - meaning we can still bear fruit in every season – in abundance and in scarcity. We are told in Psalm 84:11-12 (NIV): For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless. O LORD Almighty, blessed is the man who trusts in you.” There is purpose for us and others in all He allows. God both exalts and abases for His purposes and glory and the good of His children. A simple glance at the whole of Scripture confirms that. His desire is for us to trust Him even when we cannot understand His ways.

It is easy to trust God when things are going swimmingly well, Amen? But when we want what we do not have or have what we do not want, well, let’s just say it is not so easy. This is why we are told to trust Him - leaning not on our own understanding – and it is He Who will direct our path – even if it is pithy. He is with us and more than sufficient to meet our every need. As we call on Him He tells us great and unsearchable things we do not know (Jeremiah 33:3 (NIV). Further, He is nearest to the child in the fire – think Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego.

Our confidence is to remain in God – no matter how hard the winds may howl and the tears may flow. We can know that what is allowed in some way will end for our good. If He does not give us what we crave, we can know He will give us what we need – for both His glory and our good. Remember He has this, even this. Nothing takes the Master by surprise. Nothing. Those who place their trust in God are blessed even though perhaps the world does not recognize it (or perhaps even ourselves) it does not keep it from being true. We must not give way to distrustful thoughts and lean on our own limited understandings. He has told us He will never leave nor forsake us. Our confidence is to remain in Him as we lean on Him and not our own limited understanding. Our God is a loving and wise Father Who knows what is for our very best – even if we do not “feel” it. Our emotions are to take a back seat to what we know to be true Truth.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)

  • We are never to be lacking in zeal but keep our spiritual fervor serving the Lord.
  • We are to be zealous for the Lord’s great Name – through His power for His glory.
  • Create in me a pure heart and a steadfast spirit Oh Lord.
