Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.** Colossians 3:16-17 (NIV)**
The Word of God is to indwell in us richly, meaning it is to go from our heads to our hearts to our hands. Jesus was the Word made flesh and “whoever claims to live in Him must walk as Jesus did,” God’s Word tells us in 1 John 2:6 (NIV). This is why it is protos that we know and are obedient to the Word of God. We are to be as familiar with it as a close and dear friend. Scripture is to be an inhabitant – One Who accompanies us throughout the day and is as a companion or an intimate close relationship. It is alive and works in (and on) our hearts and minds to change us from the inside out through the power of the Holy Spirit – making us more and more like the Master. Indeed, it is to be something we would not part with for all the world with its glitz and glamor. We neglect it to our own harm, satisfaction and joy. If we know and believe and rightly discern God’s Word we would rarely let it out of our hands. Indeed, the only two things that are eternal on this earth are the Word of God and the souls of men.
The Bible also illuminates God’s gracious and mysterious purposes. He reveals His eternal Truths in the Scriptures as well as His everlasting love and His precious thoughts. And our obedience is to be set by the sundial of the Word of God. It is to be our authority in all of life. God never goes against His revealed will found in His Word. This is why Satan seeks to keep us from it through chronic distractions and interruptions. Yet, we are called to obey it and how can we obey it if we are ignorant of it. We do ourselves great disservice when we remain clueless to what the Scriptures have to say as we all are held accountable to its precepts and every command carries with it the same Authority. Further, it is the whole of Scripture that makes the believer whole. God’s commands – not our comfort – is to be our duty and delight. Our obedience is not for vain glory rather for a pure eye for His glory. When we do His will rightly, we are doing it for God’s honor – that He would be magnified. And when God is the most glorified in our lives we are the most satisfied. Our motive in our obedience is to bring Him honor and glory and in so doing it brings us much good.
Studying Scripture - the whole of Scripture - chapter by chapter and verse by verse and applying its truth to our lives is how one truly feeds their soul and spirit. It might not sound exciting and perhaps even boring - like eating plain vegetables sans accompaniments - but once one starts digging and uncovering true Truths the Bible begins coming alive, allowing us to take hold of the life that is truly life. You begin by reading it and it ends up reading you. Our Lord Jesus becomes more alive and real to us. Completing us for every good work.
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
