My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding, and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God. For the LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. He holds victory in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones. Proverbs 2:1-8 (NIV)

The Lesson Learned

Scripture tells us our Lord is the Source of true wisdom. Further, we are to turn our hearts towards His wisdom, applying the knowledge and insight gleaned from it. All wisdom is in God and He has graciously given us the Scriptures that we may learn and grow up in Him. It is True Truth. We are not to remain infants, being tossed around by every whim of doctrine – rather we are to grow up in Him Who is both the Head and the Word. All Scripture is God breathed and profitable. We neglect it to our own peril. It gives us wisdom, understanding, discernment and insight of God’s ways as well as the ways of mankind, presenting both man’s good and poor choices. Indeed, Scripture tells us in Psalms 119:9-11 (NIV): “How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” We cleanse our way by walking in the path of God’s Word and delighting in its precepts. As believers, we have been given all we need in the Scriptures. We have also been given the indwelling Holy Spirit to equip and supply the power to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord Jesus. We do ourselves much disservice and harm when we neglect its truths. Indeed, Scripture is true Truth.

Vain and empty things are unworthy of our time and efforts. As believers we are to be growing up in Him - Who is the Head – Jesus. Scripture tells us we are to walk as He walked. And to train ourselves - through His Word - to be Godly by applying Scripture to our hearts and lives. Godly wisdom brings forth great blessings. It is truly of the greatest importance and value. Indeed, Scripture tells us in Proverbs 4:5 (NIV): “Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or swerve from them.” We are not to be indolent and lazy, rather set our hearts towards learning and applying Scripture’s Truths to our lives. It is the whole of Scripture that makes the Christian whole. And it is both soul work and eternal work as it is God’s work. Rarely does He (if ever) use a believer greatly who does not know and tremble at His Word. It is God’s Truth which is profitable and necessary. The Lord is certainly worthy of all our diligence in this matter. Wisdom is Man’s true strength and when we handle the matter of Godly wisdom well it is a noble achievement and serves as a compass to steer us across this trackless waste of life – not only helping ourselves but others as well. Otherwise we become subject to every wind and wave of doctrine. We must learn to handle Truth wisely if we desire to journey safely. Be a Berean and commit yourselves to the study and application of God’s Word. He has much to teach us and we never reach the end of it.

Whoever gives heed to instruction prospers, and blessed is he who trusts in the LORD. Proverbs 16:20 (NIV)

  • We are never to be lacking in zeal but keep our spiritual fervor serving the Lord.
  • We are to be zealous for the Lord’s great Name – through His power for His glory.
  • Create in me a pure heart and a steadfast spirit Oh Lord.
