His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. 2 Peter 1:3-4 (NIV)
There are promises in Scripture which are suitable for every circumstance the followers of sweet Jesus will experience. Scripture is replete with them. And what God has promised, that He will do. Not only that, but whatever God has done for His people in the past, He continues to do so in the present. Even His Names used in His Word brings us much comfort as He is our Friend who sticks closer than a brother, our mighty God, our Counselor, our Shepherd, our Shield, our Savior, our Deliverer, our Advocate, our Portion and on and on we could go.
When we apply His promises to our lives through the power of His Holy Spirit indwelling every saint, we gain encouragement and are equipped to go further still. Indeed, the Holy Spirit within equips us to manifest His fruit in our lives – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control – in ever increasing measure - if we do not shrink His control by our own poor choices. He will never force our obedience. He looks for willingness of heart. It is sad to think of our many poor choices when we forgo His will and His way to go our own ways. The Creator always knows what is best for the created.
We would benefit ourselves greatly to gather some of the myriad of promises discovered throughout the pages of Scripture – mining them as great treasures and applying them to our lives, dwelling and meditating upon them to bring us much comfort in our walks and power in our prayers. They are indeed meat in the wilderness and we should not allow these “pearls” to lie neglected in the “fields”. God loves to hear His saints praying back His promises. “Lord, you said…” The more we dwell upon them – chewing them, so to speak, as a cow chews the cud, we are enabled to extract out all of the goodness and the nutrients applying them as a balm to our hurting and difficult circumstances. As we meditate upon His promises, it squeezes the sweetness out of them. Also, it does us well to remember what Scripture tells us in 2 Corinthians 1:20 (NIV): “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are "Yes" in Christ. And so through him the ‘Amen’ is spoken by us to the glory of God.”
Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God. 2 Corinthians 7:1 (NIV)
