Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)

The Lesson Learned

Who wouldn’t rather exchange an anxious and worried heart for the peace of God – a peace which transcends all understanding? “All” (an all-encompassing word) “understanding”. God desires to take away our worries, our heaviness of hearts, and our despair and exchange them for His amazing peace which is beyond our natural sense and feelings. Our prayers opens the heart of God and He fills the needy, empty soul with His peace and presence. It is a pouring out of our pain and need to God the Father through Christ the Son and God the Spirit Who indwells every believer in Jesus. God is more than able to handle all our problems and anxieties. All we simply need to do is come – turning to Him in wholehearted devotion and a willing mind. Our sincerity sans pretense opens the heart of God. Every.time.

The Father is in tune to our tears, sighs and groans – He is ever close to the brokenhearted. Even capturing our tears in a bottle – He is fully aware of the condition of our hearts.  There remains much strength, honesty and affection in true prayer. His desire is for our souls to pant for Him as a deer pants for streams of water. Do we do this? Is our desire for Him as boundless as one that has a great thirst for something to drink?

I have a new puppy. Actually, I have two new puppies (I know, it was a weak moment). These puppies are in a playpen - like contraption by my desk. Whenever I get up to get anything they press their noses through the slats looking for me. They have become my object lesson as I believe that is how our God desires for us to be looking for Him – to be right by Him. To walk with Him in the cool of the day – so to speak. While He is always “with us” we are often so distracted by the world and its loudness, getting our focus off Him and onto lesser things. He desires for us not to be so busy in our own little ways, in our own little worlds that we neglect His Presence, His Peace, His Love, His Direction, His understanding. “Come to me”, says He and I will give you My Presence, My Peace, My Love, My Direction, My Understanding. Jesus came to make this so. His desire is not only to fill our cups but to overflow them. All we have to do is come. As we pray thus, we discover an emptiness in all else but God alone. It is only in Him we find true rest and satisfaction for our weary souls.

Further, when we have fervently and consistently prayed as Moses’ mother did until by faith she finally had to place him in an ark covered with pitch and hid him at the rivers bank. And Pharoah’s daughter came to wash, discovered the child and gave him back to his mother to nurse. Truly when our heart’s desires through tears and groans are given up for dead in the eyes of sense, they remain floating upon the water. We are to let our faith and hope see what will become of them. Though the answer to our earnest petitions tarry we are to remain steadfast in prayer. God’s timing is not usually our own.

Our prayers are to be offered in faith, humility and fervency with the right motives at heart. And God’s delays teach us to watch and pray with perseverance and belief that we know that He hears us and always, always has our best interest in all He allows or does not allow. The waiting causes us to focus upon Him and we remain at the door until He comes. If we learn to wait patiently for Him, we would certainly hear more from Him. James 5:16 B (NIV) tells us: “The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.”

Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD. Psalms 27:14 (NIV)

  • We are never to be lacking in zeal but keep our spiritual fervor serving the Lord.
  • We are to be zealous for the Lord’s great Name – through His power for His glory.
  • Create in me a pure heart and a steadfast spirit Oh Lord.
