"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)

The Lesson Learned

The peace of God is as a garrison around us, a high fortress guarding us and transcending mere human understanding. As we seek God in prayer and petition and a thankful heart God promises this transcendent peace. A peace that is unearthly in its nature. God is always warning us in Scripture to avoid anxious care – again and again. In our anxious care we are placing ourselves in the place of God Himself. It is imagining that we are wiser than God. We put ourselves in His place as if we could do for Him what He has undertaken to do for us. Though saved, we lack belief. We end up listening to Satan and self and it is sheer unbelief in God’s power that is the cause of our despondency and the interruption of our perfect peace.
We must learn to talk to ourselves, like the Psalmist, questioning why our souls are so downcast. “Address to yourself, preach to yourself and question yourself,” as the great preacher D. Martyn Lloyd Jones wrote. We must learn how to handle ourselves rather than coddling. We do ourselves no favor when we do the opposite. Fixing our eyes on the Author and Perfecter of our faith Who for the joy set before Him endured the cross and scorning the shame sat down at the right hand of God the Father. Jesus looked at what the cross was going to accomplish. We must look at the crosses God allows in our lives and know He is bringing about something for our good and for His glory never one surpassing the other. No matter how difficult this cross may seem. If you have walked with Him long enough, you will know that, Amen?
When we grumble and complain we can tell ourselves to stop – look up and not in or out. No one can bring us fulfilling peace like the Lord Jesus. It is His peace that sustains the weary and wanting. Depend upon it!

"You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you. Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD, the LORD, is the Rock eternal." Isaiah 26:3-4 (NIV)

  • We are never to be lacking in zeal but keep our spiritual fervor serving the Lord.
  • We are to be zealous for the Lord’s great Name – through His power for His glory.
  • Create in me a pure heart and a steadfast spirit Oh Lord.
