Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)
Satan often seeks to discourage and dismay believers with a spirit of dread, despondency and fear. We play outcomes out in our minds - often freezing us from going forward - and our faith must rise to the occasion of quenching his fiery darts of fears. Fleeing to prayer is important here and we must learn to quickly pray - turning everything back over to the Master - who promises to direct our paths. Remember, if God is our God He is so forever and we can cast all our burdens upon Him because the promise of Scripture is that He will never let the righteous fall (Psalms 55:22 NIV). And we are to seek to take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ. There is purpose for all He allows – even in the most difficult – consider the cross of Christ.
Faith alone quenches the dreadful darts of the adversary who seeks to encourage hard thoughts of God when His providence is challenging for us to comprehend or perhaps even recognize. Satan desires to get us to question God’s care, His justice, His faithfulness, His love – and to view God through the broken glasses of pain and suffering. This is why the knowledge of the whole of Scripture is so vastly important. A few select verses rarely sustain us in times of such trials as they give us an incomplete picture. The whole of Scripture is our great guide. Remember, when Satan sought to tempt our Lord Jesus in the desert, and He correctly responded to the great adversary of our souls with God’s Word – every.single.time. And we continue to fight Satan’s attacks with the Word of God as well – just as our Master did.
It also behooves us to remember that whatever God takes from us is less than what we owe Him and what He leaves for us is more than what we deserve. For what do we have that we did not receive from His mighty Hand of mercy? Remember as well, He is our all sufficient good and whoever has Him has enough and has all that they need. It is never Jesus plus something else. It is simply Jesus. We also have no problems that He cannot address or riddles that He cannot solve; we have no sin which He cannot forgive or nor adversary He cannot overpower. We must look to Jesus for everything we need as flesh will most assuredly fail us. Whatever our need, Jesus can fill it as He is to be our sufficiency and strength – an ever present help in our times of need. Jesus is perfectly suited to bring us rescue and relief.
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”** John 14:27 (NIV)**
