All of This and More to Come: If God Is Our Portion We Are More Than Blessed

Since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who acts on behalf of those who wait for him. Isaiah 64:4 (NIV)

The Lesson Learned

We are not to have our eyes fixed on the glitz and glimmer of this world and its ways rather on the Lord Jesus. Scripture tells us in 1 John 2:15-17 (NIV): “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world--the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does--comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.” The word “world” used here is everything that is in enmity with God. We are to find our sufficiency and strength in God alone.

When we allow “props” to enter into our lives, usurping God’s rightful place on the throne of our hearts, we become more like Humpty Dumpty rather than a child of the King of Kings and Lord of Lord’s and we had better start preparing ourselves for a fall. In God alone is fullness – He fills the vessel to overflowing – filling our hearts with the fullness of Him - so that there is no longer an empty shaking cup within. All else is nice, but certainly not necessary for our souls. It does us well to remember that it is Christ alone – not Christ plus anything else that the soul longs for. This, of course, we will discover on our deathbeds where no “props” will suffice sans Jesus’ sacrifice. It is never God plus something else. Sadly, many do not embrace this until it is too late – and this is nothing new in our times either. Scripture tells us in 1 Corinthians 2:8-10 (NIV): “None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. However, as it is written: ‘No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him’ -- but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit.”

Our God is an awesome God and He delights to fill His children with “the fullness of Him Who fills everything in every way” as Paul writes in Ephesians 1:22 (NIV): “And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.” Whatever we need in our spiritual walks with Him, He supplies it. He walks with us, holding us by His right Hand, and afterward He will take us into glory. He is the strength of our hearts and our portion forever. The pleasures of worldliness, selfishness and sin are only for a short season but if God is your portion He will forever be your portion.

For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.** Ephesians 1:15-23 (NIV)**

  • We are never to be lacking in zeal but keep our spiritual fervor serving the Lord.
  • We are to be zealous for the Lord’s great Name – through His power for His glory.
  • Create in me a pure heart and a steadfast spirit Oh Lord.
